Mercy Ministry: Friendship Center

We desire the kind of church life where every person receives love and care. We hope to live so that it becomes unthinkable to ignore another who is in need (1 John 3:17). We recognize that complications accompany such an effort. The bible tells us, for example, that if a person is not willing to work, “let him not eat” (2 Thes. 3:10-12). The joy of helping others requires discernment and perseverance.
God also calls us to shine His light by showing mercy to those who are not a part of the church family (Matt. 5:16).
Friendship Center is the Riverside ministry that oversees this entire effort of showing God’s mercy to both those inside and outside the church. It is supported from tithes and offerings given to the church, from special gifts, and from proceeds from our Thrift Store.
Food Ministry:
We have the privilege of assisting people lacking the most basic needs. Our staff responds on a daily basis to those who visit our church office. Each person or family is interviewed and a file is started. Financial and spiritual counseling is offered and sometimes required for ongoing assistance.
Thrift Store:
The store opened in 1998 to provide a connecting point to the people in the community where we serve. Many items are donated to the ministry and these items are made available at low cost to those who come to Friendship Center in need of clothing and household items.
Single Parents:
Single Parents receive care at Friendship Center. This care includes but is not limited to education/career training, financial assistance, and counseling. In the summer months we provide scholarships to a local Christian camp while school is out. At tax season we have financial counselors who assist in tax returns. There are classes and numerous events offered to encourage our single parents.
Displaced Families:
On a limited basis we are able to assist those with a place to stay. We work with county agencies and service organizations to find a home for those in need and at times to provide temporary housing.
Holiday Ministry:
At Christmas and Thanksgiving our staff and volunteers partner with the city and local agencies to help with gifts, meals and in whatever way we can.
