Secret Sex Wars

By June 3, 2011No Comments

A few months ago Adam preached to us out of Ephesians 5:3-8, reminding us of God’s absolute call for sexual purity in our lives:

“But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not associate with them; for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light…”

Sexual immorality and all impurity “must not even be named” among us. We must “walk as children of the light.” A powerful text and compelling sermon, shedding light upon the “deception” and “emptiness” of this darkened form of depravity. If you found yourself convicted and stirred, but at a loss where to turn for further help, let me offer a follow-up suggestion in the form of a book. It’s called: “Secret Sex Wars: A Battle Cry for Purity.”
Though edited by one Robert Scott, the book is actually written by seven pastors. Their combined pastoral experience, biblical teaching, and godly wisdom combine to form an excellent resource on the subject of purity. Like the Bible, the book call us not simply to avoid sexual impurity, but rather to put it to death. To declare all-out war on sexual immorality in our lives, wherever it may be found. The target audience of the book is African American men, but as a white Christian, I can attest the content is good for any man (or woman) who wants to grow in purity of heart.

Even if you find yourself in a position of strength in this area today, I still commend this resource to you. The ideal time to prepare for temptation is not in the midst of it – but before it rears its ugly head. As First Corinthians 10:12 graciously reminds us, “anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.” In chapter 4 of the book, the moral failure of King David with Bathsheba is point forward as “a flawed battle plan to avoid.” If David, a man after God’s own heart, can fall then so can any one of us. We, as your pastors, want to equip you to, not simply to stand your ground in the area of purity, but to press forward into Spirit-empowered victory. So please pick up a copy of “Secret Sex Wars” at the Book Table and join us in the “battle cry for purity!”
