20 Days of Awakening

20-days-of-awakening-1920x1080-web-00

Join us as we lift this next season in prayer as a church family:

As we prepare for the end of Summer and the beginning of the Fall, we’ve set aside 20 days for prayer and seeking the Lord as a church family: 20 Days of Awakening. From Aug 19 to Sept 7, Pastor Brian will lead us through daily video devotions and scripture readings to help us prepare for what God is going to do in this next season. Whether you’re a college student, young professional, family or small group transitioning from the calm of summer into the active fall, you can follow along with the daily prayer targets designed to prepare us for what God wants to do this year.

Consider fasting in some form during this period: Pick something that is a part of your life, a type of entertainment, a type of food for example and give it up for 20 days. On September 7th, we will end our 20 days of Awakening with a churchwide prayer meeting to come together and pray that God would fill us with the Spirit. Let’s see what God will do as we seek him in this time together.

Follow along via the Riverside Church Social Media (FacebookTwitter,Instagram), Website and App.

Introduction Video

Day 1 – Confidence

Scripture Reading:
Matthew 6:25-34

Verse of the Day:
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”  Matthew 6:33

Prayer Target:
Please pray for Riverside’s elders – they are away for a two-day retreat.

Devotion:
Today we are asking God to awaken within us confidence.
God himself is the foundation and the source of our confidence.
We are confident because of who God is and because of all he promises to do.

Day 2 – The Fight

Scripture Reading:
2 Corinthians 10:1-7

Verse of the Day:
4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 2 Corinthians 10:4

Prayer Target:
Please pray for Riverside’s elders – they are away for a two-day retreat.

Devotional:
Today we start with bad news, bad news that you need to take to heart. But as is most often the case with biblical truth, it leads to good news, good news that is much better than the bad news.

Day 3 – Clarity

Scripture Reading:
Ephesians 6:10-20

Verse of the Day:
“And [pray] also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel.”  Ephesians 6:19

Prayer Target:
Help me (and of Riverside) Lord to share my testimony and Your good news clearly and boldly.

Devotional:
We are asking God today to awaken within us clarity, and our verse comes at the end of Paul’s famous writing about spiritual warfare, about our spiritual armor.

Day 4 – Kingdom Mindedness

Scripture Reading:
Matthew 13:1-52

Verse of the Day:
“As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it.  He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”  Matthew 13:23

Prayer Target:
Help me Lord to produce kingdom fruit – the fruit of souls and of Your kingdom expanding.

Devotion:
In the Lord’s Prayer we are taught by our Lord to pray to the Father, “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done.” We are told by Jesus to “Seek first the kingdom of God!”

Day 5 – Contentment

Scripture Reading:
Hebrews 13:1-9

Verse of the Day:
“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5

Prayer Target:
Pray for Riverside and for yourself to be debt free.  Contentment ushers in opportunity for generous living connected to living debt free.  Pray for it all!  God will do it!

Devotional:
Today’s verse contains a wonderful promise and I’m afraid also an underutilized promise. It is the promise of God’s presence.

Day 6 – Wisdom

Scripture Reading:
James 1:1-8

Verse of the Day:
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” James 1:5

Prayer Target:
Please pray for wisdom for yourself and especially for our Riverside leaders.

Devotion:
James’ subject in these verses is trials. He tells us to REJOICE in all of our trials.

Day 7 – Conviction

Scripture Reading:
2 Timothy 1:1-14

Verse of the Day:
“Which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me.” 2 Timothy 1:12

Prayer Target:
Ask God to produce consistency and steadfastness in your life – the kind of faithfulness that accompanies solid biblical conviction.

Devotional:
Unexpected and unwanted circumstances have a way of shaking us.

Day 8 – Gospel Power

Scripture Reading:
Romans 3:21-31

Verse of the Day:
“16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, ‘The righteous shall live by faith.'” Romans 1:16-17

Prayer Target:
No condemnation!  Pray for yourself, for Riverside’s leaders and for all Riverside people to live free of condemnation under the gospel.

Devotional:
Paul tells us, under the Holy Spirit’s inspiration, that there is a message that is so full of truth and so transforming that it literally contains and unleashes the power of God in your life.

Day 9 – Godliness

Scripture Reading:
Romans 6:1-14

Verse of the Day:
“12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. 13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.” Romans 6:12-13

Prayer Target:
Pray for tomorrow’s Sunday worship gathering; Pray for God to fill His house with people and with His presence.

Devotion:
Romans 6 provides the Christian with delightful and practical help.  The power to overcome sin is found not in ourselves and not even our own effort.  Sure, we do give ourselves to the quest of holiness, but the fight is one of faith and is found in Jesus.

Day 10 – Abandonment

Scripture Reading:
Proverbs 3:1-12

Verse of the Day:
“5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6

Prayer Target:
Ask God to give you peace, the wholeness that characterizes all who are abandoned to Him.

Devotional:
These verses describe a healthy life.  They provide a marvelous overview of a life thriving in God.

Day 11 – Confident Speech

Scripture Reading:
Psalm 18:1-6

Verse of the Day:
1 I love you, O Lord, my strength.
2 The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
3 I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised,
and I am saved from my enemies.
Psalm 18:1-3

Prayer Target:
Praise: Teach O God to praise Your name. Make Your praise resound at Riverside!

Devotional:
We’re going to spend a few days in this amazing psalm, Psalm 18.

Day 12 – Confident Prayer

Scripture Reading:
Psalm 18:6-15

Verse of the Day:
In my distress I called upon the Lord;
to my God I cried for help.
From his temple he heard my voice,
and my cry to him reached his ears.
Psalm 18:6

Prayer Target:
Help me Jesus to pray in faith.  Make Riverside a house of prayer.

Devotional:
These verses are revealing.  David possesses absolute confidence that when he prays, God answers.  He doesn’t just answer, he moves heaven and earth to answer!

Day 13 – Security

Scripture Reading:
Psalm 18:16-19

Verse of the Day:
“He brought me out into a broad place;
he rescued me, because he delighted in me.”
Psalm 18:19

Prayer Target:
Remove insecurity from me in all its forms. Establish me and Riverside in Your secure place.

Devotional:
We are in Psalm 18 for these days of our Awakening, celebrating with David his great confidence in God.

Day 14 – Identity

Scripture Reading:
Psalm 18:20-24

Verse of the Day:
So the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.
Psalm 18:24

Prayer Target:
Remove condemnation and awaken in me the knowledge of who I am in Christ. Make the gospel to ring out at Riverside.

Devotional:
You’re probably like me; you read these verses and you think, there is no way I am going to go before God and talk about my righteousness, there is no way I am going to ask the Lord to treat me according to my own goodness.

Day 15 – Integrity

Scripture Reading:
Psalm 18:25-27

Verse of the Day:
“For you save a humble people,
but the haughty eyes you bring down.”
Psalm 18:27

Prayer Target:
Father make us an authentic people. Remove hypocrisy and help us to be real before You and one another.

Devotional:
I love these verses.  They celebrate a life of integrity.
David is the same person on the outside as he is on the inside.
He wears not just his emotions on his sleeve, but all of it, all that he is and isn’t.

Day 16 – Excellence

Scripture Reading:
Psalm 18:28-30

Verse of the Day:
This God—his way is perfect;
the word of the Lord proves true;
he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.
Psalm 18:30

Prayer Target:
Please pray for tomorrow’s Sunday worship service! Pray that God will meet us powerfully and personally, that he will save and renew and unite and empower.

Devotional:
Now this is really getting good. We continue our way through Psalm 18. Awaken in me excellence O God!

Day 17 – Celebration

Scripture Reading:
Psalm 18:31-45

Verse of the Day:
For who is God, but the Lord?
And who is a rock, except our God?—
Psalm 18:31

Prayer Target:
Fill us O God with thanksgiving and celebration.

Devotional:
Today’s passage is a bit longer but still only 15 verses.  Take time to read it.
Here we get to see what all out celebration looks like.

Day 18 – Vision

Scripture Reading:
Psalm 18:46-50

Verse of the Day:
For this I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations,
and sing to your name.
Psalm 18:49

Prayer Target:
Shine Your light O God in me and through me.  Give us understanding and vision.

Devotional:
We end our time in Psalm 18 today.
We see that great praise and celebration leads to great vision.

Day 19 – Readiness

Scripture Reading:
Acts 2

Verse of the Day:
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
Acts 2:38-39

Prayer Target:
Spirit Fullness – Pray for God to fill us with His Spirit in tomorrow night’s Prayer Service!

Devotional:
We are ending our 20 days asking for God to fill us with His Spirit.  That will be our prayer in tomorrow night’s prayer service.

Day 20 – Fullness

Scripture Reading:
Ephesians 5:15-21

Verse of the Day:
And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,
Ephesians 5:18

Prayer Target:
Spirit Fullness – Pray for God to fill us with His Spirit in tonight’s Prayer service!

Devotional:
In our last two days we are asking God to fill us with His Holy Spirit.
In our passage for today we given a before, during and after of the fullness of the Spirit.
